All About Cake

How you slice it!

Did you know that wedding cake servings are supposed to be smaller than a slice you might expect of a party cake? There are a number of reasons for this whether it be to reduce the costs or the fact that the wedding cake itself is not meant as the primary desert. Whatever the reason is, this is an important consideration when ordering your wedding cake. If you want your guests to get an average sized slice, be sure to tell the kitchen staff to slice the cake accordingly!

How you shape it!

Having explained the slicing process above, it is important to note that the shape of your cake will also determine the amount of slices available, hence the cost as well. There are four basic ‘forms’ of cake; wedding style which are often tiered, barrel cakes which are rather tall, basic cakes and sheet cakes. Each of these ‘forms’ can also be incorporated in each other’s design.

Frostings matter!

There are a variety of ways to cover a cake; the main ones being traditional frosting which is sweeter than a smooth buttercream, and fondant which has a sweet marshmallow taste and texture. Whatever you decide you need to know their limitations, especially if you plan to have your cake on display for the duration of the celebration. Buttercream covered cakes should not be left out for more than 1.5 hours, and fondant covered cakes will dry out over time.

Fillings for all!

What you put between the layers of your cake is up to you and the choices are many; buttercream, fruit compote, ganache, mousse, or curd of any flavor (think of the consistency of lemon in a lemon meringue pie).

Decorations count!

Did you know the average cost of a sugar flower is 5-7$ This cost is based on the time it takes to construct each one individually. This is why I always recommend using real flowers to adorn your cake as it is often less expensive, particularly if you have already arranged for flowers at your reception, the florist will often ‘throw-in’ a couple extra blooms for your cake.
